Ocho Rios is located on Jamaica’s northeast cost. Once a small fishing and banana port, Ocho Rios has become the cruise ship capital of Jamaica and the most popular western Caribbean port of call due to its stunning waterfalls, beaches, and fun filled Shore Excursions.

There is plenty to see and do while your cruise ship is docked in this scenic tropical port. In addition to relaxing in the incomparable blue Caribbean sea and sun-worshipping on the magnificent beaches, there are a number of excellent excursions in and around Ocho Rios that can include shopping, snorkeling, downhill mountain bike riding, botanical gardens tours, plantation tours, horseback riding treks, river tubing adventures, and river rafting. For beach lovers, there are Mahogany, Boscobel, and James Bond beach. At Mahogany beach you and your family will be delighted with the variety of activities there are to enjoy.

One of the best ways to see the tropical beauty Jamaica has to offer is by booking a shore excursion. Your cruise ship offers a variety of Shore excursions in beautiful Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and they range in price from $25.00 - $150.00 per person. These excursions are very popular and fill up very fast so to avoid being disappointed, try to book early. Many cruise lines offer shore excursions on their websites, allowing bookings before leaving home.

Another option to booking shore excursions is with an independent operator. You can find independent operators offering the same, if not better and more private, shore excursions at competitive rates. When looking for independent operators make sure that they belong to “Jamaica’s Union of Travelers Association” (J.U.T.A). JUTA operators can be recognized by an identification card and their vehicles will have a red license plate. Remember to book in advance; if no reservation is available for your arrival date, your last resort will be to negotiate your excursion with a tour operator at the pier, but be careful; prices can vary dramatically from operator to operator.

There is an abundance of fun filled activities in Ocho Rios and it is difficult to pick one out of the many options, however, my personal favorite excursion is to Dunn’s River Falls. Most ship passengers who visit Ocho Rios are eager to take the challenge of climbing this 600 ft (183m) waterfall, shaped like a giant staircase, cascading down to form cool pools among rocks, nestled in a picturesque forest of trees. For those who feel a little less daring, one can walk along the dramatic falls observing the beauty of the lush tropical vegetation. Beach lovers can hang out at the base of the falls. Don’t forget to bring your swimsuit, and waterproof camera. Lockers and water shoes can be rented on site. You might opt to save money by bringing a pair of old sneakers to protect your feet when climbing (sandals are not allowed).

Shore excursions can be a truly memorable experience, but also time consuming. I recommend researching the various excursions and comparing prices before booking. It is best to book excursions located within the Ocho Rios area and not more than 30 minutes away. You and your family will have more time to relax and take in the beautiful Jamaican scenery instead of worrying about getting back to the boat on time.

Lamar Jayden is the owner of Ocho Rios Tour. Ocho Rios Tour offers a variety of shore excursions in Ocho Rios. They specialize in cruise ship passengers looking to maximize Ocho Rios shore excursion activities at reduced cost.

A cruise is a voyage of discovery, an experience of cultural extravaganza of various civilizations. Cruising can reveal the biggest continents with the lengthiest coastlines and the highest mountains of the world.

To explore the true majesty of our world and its magnificent past, to experience the agnanimity of its religions and its peoples, embark on a cruise . You will never ever forget the experience.

Of all the cruises that I have been on, I liked the Asia cruise because it takes you to Singapore and Hong Kong. It was definitely worth a look. The temples in Thailand , the temples of India, or the peaceful eyes of Buddha, redefine spiritual faith of the believers and non-believers. Native women display graceful dance forms of India , the Japanese tea ceremony and the Chinese theatre. All of these wonders have enormous cultural significance that are and integral part of the region’s tradition. It is a pleasure to be a spectator of such enormous cultural and traditional environment intermingles with every walk of life, so alike to each other yet so very regional in its own right.

The Asia cruise takes the traveler along the Malaysian, Vietnamese and the Thai seas. Splurge on pretty gifts from the fabulous shopping arcades of Singapore and Hong Kong . Take time to spoil yourself in Dubai. Be a part of a once in a lifetime shopping experience with discounts and promotional offers like you have never seen. Come to Bollywood, know what family entertainmentcan be found and enjoyed by watching a Hindi film.

Your Asia cruise can be a channel and opportunity to explore the cultures and land masses with their own unique spirit and expression. You can go on an Asia cruise to suit your own needs
whether it is Far East or the southern pacific. Every cruise has its mystique and its own story to unfold.

After you have chosen your cruise, you should expect elegance and no gimmicks. You can enjoy your vacation at your own pace as if you were still at home but better. If you like solitary
experiences then you can jog unmolested, swim a lap in warm pools or read a great book. You should, however, take part in some of the free activities. Join the exercise classes, get a soothing massage, and enjoy a relaxing sauna.

Some cruises offer aerial sightseeing, white water rafting, and hikes amongst other things. You can find spas, health clubs and even wedding chapels on your cruise ship.Children have special play areas or centers with lots of fun and entertainment. The cruise agency often invite at least one guest speaker to share their experiences about the region you are traveling through giving you funny and sometimes curious insights. Most of the cruise staff provides excellent service and all guests get first class attention.

The dedicated staff looks after you very well and is there at your beckoned call. You can find the vital information you need from the staff and other places on board about where to find souvenirs, to shop for local handicrafts, or nice restaurants that are sure to delight and amaze you.

Asian cruises have exotic entertainment billings that showcase authentic entertainment and special theme events, hilarious comedies, and regional musicals. The exquisite dance perrformances will most assuredly leave you spell bound.

Spellbound and mesmerized will be the mood for you when your cruise journey ends. Surely, you and the ones you love will benefit in more ways than one from a trip of this magnitude.

Many parents of small children find that their idea of a dream holiday differs somewhat from that of the children. For kids from tiny babies up to teenagers, the world of Disney holds an appeal that is universal. While this is great for the kids, and the parents would have a great time too, many adults would prefer to go on a relaxing cruise vacation. The luxury and opulence of this lifestyle appeals to many but when sacrifices are to be made, it is the parents who usually end up making them.

Disney, being the clever company that they are, have managed to provide both parents and children with their holiday of their dreams, combining the magical world of Disney characters with a cruise holiday. These Disney cruises offer families the best of both worlds and ensure that all of the members of the family have a holiday never to forget.

The Disney Cruises offer breaks from 3 to 7 nights in duration. These include a variety of off-shore and on-shore options and allow you to choose the cruise which is truly right for your family. The shorter 3 or 4 night cruises take in the Bahamas and call into port at Nassau and Disney’s own private island, Castaway Cay. The longer cruises of 7 nights offer you the choice of eastern or Western Caribbean seas and islands but whichever you choose you can be confident that your views will be breathtaking and that you are almost certain to experience the beautiful sunshine that this part of the world is famous for.

In between the island exploring that these cruises offer you, you will be aboard a truly spectacular cruise liner. There is no need to worry about what you will do to occupy your time when sailing as there is a whole host of activities available for all the family. Activity groups are provided for children through to teenagers, and these groups are divided into ages so that you can be sure the activities on offer will stimulate and entertain your child, whatever their age. Disney cruises even offer parents their own club which is just for adults, allowing them to spend some quality time away from the children whilst remaining confident in the knowledge that they are being cared for by fully qualified staff. Activities available just for the adults include a spa and salon, nightclub and adult-only restaurant.

Family time is also catered for onboard the cruise liner. Live entertainment is provided daily, beginning with a Welcome Aboard show and ending your cruise with a Magical Farewell. In between you can be sure to be introduced to all of your favorite Disney characters and songs in shows which live up to and exceed the reputation Disney has for superb live entertainment.

The only problem you will have when it comes to food is deciding which restaurant to eat in. Catering for all tastes and palates, the cruises offer an exciting variety of menus and world cuisine. This gives everyone a real opportunity to try something new and the exceptional chefs on board will ensure that it is all prepared to the highest standard. Only the finest ingredients are selected for every dish, as you would expect from Disney.

With so much to see and do on a Disney cruise, you will have very little time to spend in your room and when you return there you will want to fall straight to sleep so that you can be up and ready for your adventure the next day. However, you can rest assured that the same attention to detail is found in the rooms as it is everywhere else on the cruise. When booking, you can select the type of room you require and you can be certain that it will exceed your expectations.

For those of you who have been on our site, or followed some of our articles, you are aware that we are taking a Southern Caribbean cruise aboard the magnificent Golden Princess cruise ship. This is a family get-together-vacation with three (and one half) generations joining in. Our whole family are somewhat beach-babies/water-babies so the shore excursions of interest to some of us are beach and water related.

We received our cruise package from Princess and included in it is a booklet – 2005/2006 Southern Caribbean Shore Excursions. It is filled with interesting excursions presented by port-of-call. For ‘water-babies’ there are the usual power boat, sail boat, party boat, sea kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving excursions. But there are a few (off-)shore excursions that are relatively new or different that caught my eye.

Snuba Diving

That is not a miss-spelling. This activity is a cross between snorkeling and scuba diving. I am not a scuba diver although I’m quite sure that I would find it exhilarating. I do thoroughly enjoy snorkeling and snuba sounds like a fascinating way to experience scuba diving in shallow waters. Your equipment includes the same type of breathing mouth-piece that you would use while scuba diving. This mouth-piece is attached to a 20 or 25 foot air line to tanks on a raft floating on the service. Wherever you go, the raft follows easily. Imagine scuba diving without the heavy equipment. Our booklet lists snuba diving as a sanctioned shore excursion only in Barbados, but it is available in many other areas throughout the Caribbean.

Helmet Dive

Think Captain Nemo! Helmet Diving has become a craze in the underwater excursion circuit. The specially designed helmet and air system keeps your hair dry and even allows you to wear your glasses if required. Guided underwater walking tours allow you to ‘walk with the anima… no… fishes’. Our Princess booklet offers this activity in Aruba and St. Thomas.

BOB Underwater Adventure

Now think Captain Nemo in the 25th Century! BOB stands for Breathing Observation Bubble. A similar apparatus to the helmet dive, again excursionists can enjoy underwater life without getting hair wet and while wearing glasses. The difference is that you also ride what looks like an under-water scooter. How cool would that be? This activity is listed in our booklet for St. Thomas as well.

Power Snorkel Adventures

This activity adds a little twist to a conventional snorkeling excursion. You have a hand-held ‘scooter’ the easily and gracefully propels you through that water. For those of you old enough to remember, this was a regular type of equipment used by Lloyd Bridges in the weekly T.V. show Sea Hunt. Of course, more up-to-date movies had had actors using this equipment as a ‘prop’. For those who would like to be able to float across the briny without effort, this may be the excursion for you. Some of these guided tours have special underwater microphones for the tour guide to explain the areas traveled. The Princess booklet offers power snorkeling in Aruba, Barbados and St. Maarten.

Whale Watching

Whale watching?!? In the Caribbean?? Now for some people, this may not sound strange. I associate whale watching with Alaskan cruises and cruises in the Canadian north east. This activity in the Caribbean sounds to me to be almost alien however, knowing how cold and miserable the Canadian cruise can be, I’m thinking that I could enjoy Caribbean whale watching much more! And according to my handy-dandy booklet from Princess, There are more than 40 different species of whales and dolphins in the waters surrounding St. Lucia.

‘America’s Cup’ Regatta

This excursion is for sailors wanting to experience the exhilaration of racing on one of the multi-million dollar America’s Cup 12-metre racing yachts. You compete in an actual ‘race’ around a shortened America’s Cup course. You are even invited to work the boat if desired. Of course, you can just sit back and enjoy the ride. This excursion is recognized as one of the best shore excursions in the Caribbean and is only available on St. Maarten.

The itinerary of our chosen Southern Caribbean cruise does not include all of the ports noted above. Many of the activities will be available at our included ports-of-call.

A longed for retreat is shared in the bright days of Caribbean. The beaches, the foods and all! What more would you ask?

The Caribbean is among the most in demand tourist spots in the world. So it is not surprising to see millions of vacationers flocking the Caribbean Islands.

Caribbean cruises are very popular as well. Cruising along the islands give vacationers the rare chance of exploring the entire wonders of this top class destination. Added to it are the fun that cruising entails; leisure at ones fingertips and luxury on the other.

Planning to go aboard a Caribbean Cruise is much easier compared to the hassles back then. Most Caribbean cruises have online portals, which make them easier to reach. Tour planners are sure to help you in your schemes with just a click of the button. They provide help that would be more than welcome especially on vacation periods when tourists abound.

While there may be a number of Caribbean cruises available at any time of the year, vacation periods are expected to be booked much earlier than normal. This then can make accommodations a challenge. You can access their web portals online and book instantly. However, you also must be choosy in the Caribbean cruise that you would want to book into.

The competition for taking the most number of passengers seems to be the ultimate motto for all cruise liners. In here, don’t get trapped with the confusion of the game. Evaluate your purpose.

First, are you traveling with the family? Then it wise that you take a Caribbean cruise that will accommodate the youngest member up to the oldest of your party.

Check the facilities available. There are cruises that have equipments for childcare while there are those that does not have any.

Check also their programs for young adults and elders. With this, it would be a great idea to go on deck a Disney Cruise line where especially designed activities are made for both toddlers and teenagers. There are also themed presentations that focus on family.

Traveling on a budget? Caribbean cruises can also accommodate you with lines of medium-priced ships. However for those traveling without their minds on spending money, you will be amazed by the selections of cruises that will give you the best of everything, except only the entire sea! Take note of liners, which give high-end accommodations like the Queen Mary II or the Silversea.

Yet, prior to any decision it is wise to get as much information as you would prefer to really know the differences of each cruise.

Each one in the lines of Caribbean cruises are made to cater individual needs while providing you options for ideal combinations of activities and prices and destination stops. Whether you are traveling on extravagance, touring with your family or simply would want to get away with the one you love, Caribbean cruises are sure to provide you with whatever you require.

There are basically two types of Caribbean cruises: the contemporary or value class and the Supreme or Luxury class.

The most popular among the contemporary class are the Royal Caribbean and Carnival, which cover almost the full section of the industry. These are especially created for the vacationers who are on the budget and for famous holidays.

Premium cruise lines on the other hand, offer superiority of service that is incomparable elsewhere however, they are considerably smaller in size. These include cruise lines such as Cunard and Seabourn that are among the most well known members of the industry.

For people who have the idea of making a Caribbean trip unique, there are cruises that cover especial tours in spots that are not normally reached by other cruise lines.

Two boys from South Carolina made headlines a few weeks ago. They had spent six days adrift at sea before being rescued … off the coast of North Carolina.

The boys, one fifteen and one sixteen, had set out in a small boat with no paddles, no motor, no sail, no food and no water. The fact that they had survived for six days under these circumstances is almost a miracle.

The first lesson to be learned from their experience goes almost without saying: never, never, never set out to sea without paddles, a motor, or sails. No matter how close you think you will stay to shore, no matter how serene the ocean seems, no matter how calm the weather is, you just can’t trust that conditions will not change.

Beyond the obvious, that you do need paddles or a sail, what else do you need to survive at sea and what you need to do you to maximize your chances of survival?

The US Army Survival Manual has some very good information on the topic of survival at sea. The first thing, in the words of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, is “don’t panic.” Check the physical condition of everyone onboard. Give first aid as necessary. Take seasickness pills if available as vomiting from seasickness (or any other cause) increases the danger of dehydration.

Next, make an inventory of all equipment, food, water, thermos jugs, other containers, clothing, seat cushions, life preservers, and anything else that may be of value. If you have an emergency radio, turn it on. Have emergency signaling devices ready for instant use. If you have been forced into a raft, be sure to check for inflation, leaks and possible chafing. Make sure the buoyancy chambers are firm (well rounded but not drum tight). Check inflation regularly. Hot air expands so on hot days, release some air.

Throw out the sea anchor or improvise a sea anchor using a bucket, any other large open-mouthed container or a large roll of clothing. A sea anchor will keep you near the place where your boat became incapacitated or where you were forced into the raft, making it easier for rescuers to find you. The sea anchor will also help keep the boat or raft headed into the wind and waves.

If the weather turns stormy, try to rig a spray and windshield. If you are in a raft, see if there is a canopy. If so, keep it up at all times. Keep the raft as dry as possible and properly balanced. Everyone in the raft should stay seated with the heaviest person in the middle of the raft.

If you are in a cold climate, put on as much extra clothing as possible. Keep the clothes loose and comfortable. If you are in a raft, take care to not snag it with sharp objects. Try to keep the floor of the raft dry. If possible, cover it with canvas or cloth for insulation. Huddle with others to keep warm, moving enough to keep circulation going.

In a warm climate, be sure to rig a sunshade or canopy. Cover your skin as much as possible to protect it from the sun. Use sunscreen if available on all exposed skin. Your eyelids, the back of your ears, and the skin under your chin burn easily so do not forget these areas.

Determine exactly how much food and water you have. Work out a rationing plan to ensure you will have something to eat and water to drink for as many days as possible. Keep a tarpaulin or sail for catching rainwater. If the tarp or sail is encrusted with dried salt, wash it in seawater. There will not be enough salt left to harm you. At night, secure the sail or tarpaulin like a sunshade and turn the edges up to collect dew. When it rains, catch and drink as much water as possible. Do not drink salt water.

If you run out of food, see what you can do to catch fish. Most fish in the open sea are edible. You can make a hook from pins, needles, small nails, or any piece of metal. One way to make a wooden fishhook is to cut a piece of hardwood about two inches long, and one-half inch in diameter to make the shank. Cut a notch near one end of the wood in which to place the point. Place the point (a small nail, pin, piece of bone or similar item) in the notch. Hold the point in the notch and tie securely.

You can use shoelaces, string, thin ropes or thread from your clothes to fashion a line. Small fish will gather under the shadow of your craft. Catch them and use them as bait to catch larger fish. Make a dip net to scoop up crabs, fish and shrimp. At night, shine a flashlight on the water to attract fish.

Most important of all, prepare and take with you a survival kit. At the minimum,
This kit should contain:

· Water or the means to catch and store water.
· Food packets and items such as fishhooks and line that can be used to catch fish
· Wooden matches and waterproof matches
· Pocket knife
· Plastic spoon
· Compass
· Signaling mirror
· First aid kit
· Sun block
· Sun hat
· Poncho
· Sleeping bag
· Tarpaulin

If you have these items, as well as a couple of paddles, your chances of survival at sea are excellent.

The weekend is finally here. You’re all loaded up (well, the car is loaded, you’re not) and it’s time to head for the lake. You get to the ramp and take your place in line. When your turn comes, you back and fill until the trailer is absolutely straight on the ramp. You back up to the water’s edge, untie the cover and start transferring fishing and ski gear plus several coolers to the boat. You back into the water and launch the boat, then pull out to park while your wife and kids hold the boat. You come strolling back, jump in the boat and take off. You’re happy - on the water in only 45 minutes.

Then your wife tells you that unless you find another lake to go to, she’s staying home. While you were parking the car, all sorts of people hollered at her and the kids. They were really upset and made the kids cry. And the language they used!

I hate to tell you this, but they were right. At least partly right. I certainly don’t advocate abusing women and children, and the ones who unloaded on her but couldn’t face you are cowards. They should have unloaded on you! You were about as inconsiderate as you could be without trying.

Next time you go to the ramp, stop in the parking area first. That’s the place to take off the cover and load the boat. When you get onto the ramp, the only point of attachment should be the winch strap or cable.

Realize that almost nobody outside of a fishing show backs a trailer on a straight line all the way. The important thing is to end up straight enough to launch when you reach the bottom of the ramp. Try putting your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel. Then simply move your hand in the direction you want the rear of the trailer to go. You may be making many small corrections, but you’re making quick progress down the ramp.

Now that the boat is in the water, clear the area. If the ramp provides a dock next to ramp, have your partner wait for you with the boat there. If there is no dock, hold the boat off to the side so someone else can launch.

When you’re done for the day, just reverse these steps. You should be able to get in and out in under 10 minutes. You’ll be happier and so will your wife.

Oh, and if you get the urge to holler at some poor schnook doing what you used to do - don’t. Give them this article and help them on the road to better boating. And have a little patience with beginners, and those of us who get told “no, your other left.”

[note: I know that many women will read this, and some will resent the gender bias in some of my writing. This is not a slight, I just find the he/she thing awkward and making sure the references are balanced resembles work. I was cursed with a Y chromosome, so that’s the point of view I write from.]

Sailing ship models are models of wind-powered ships. In olden times, before the advent of the steam engines, sailing ships were the primary means of transportation across long distances of water. Sailing ships were used for ferrying passengers, cargo, mail, supplies, etc. Some of the developing countries still use sailing boats for fishing. There are many tall ship training vessels that provide recreational sailing experience.

In the age of sail yore, sailing ships had crucial military applications. Several wars were fought using sailing ships. For example, Spanish convoys returning with gold and silver plundered from the newly-discovered Americas needed protection from the pirates. Naval battles were fought among the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and the Netherlands with the help of sailing ships. The sailing ships had ferried a large number of slaves from countries in the African continent to the United States, during the time of flourishing slave trade.

With regard to the structure of the sailing ships, every vessel has a hull, rigging, and a mast to hold up the sails that tap the wind to power the ship. Ballasting helps to weigh down the bottom of the ship so that the waves would not push the ship over. Convention had it that only a vessel with three or more masts was called a ship. Others were called a boat. Now, the norm is ignored. The crew members who sail a ship are called sailors or hands, who take turns to take the watch.

In modern times, the voyage of sailing ships for transportation of passengers and cargo is not desirable, as this would take months. Expeditions, explorations, and scientific voyages or training jaunts are undertaken on sailing ships even at present.

Fine models of sailing ships are on display at the prestigious American Marine Model Gallery in Salem, Massachusetts. During the Great Age of Sail, Salem, Massachusetts, was one of America’s busiest seaports and maritime centers.

Sailing ship models are available with hundreds of dealers at prices ranging from $100 to $400. There are museum-quality sailing ship models that can cost up to $15,000.
