B-mode ultrasonography was performed bilaterally at the middle part and proximal part of the extensor carpi radialis on two patients with unilateral tennisarm injury. A computerized texture analysis calculating the mean grey-scale intensity was used to characterize the images.

For 7 minutes gain settings were standardized and kept constant. Tennisarm, musculoskeletal disorders and pain in the forearm region due to low-force exposure are major problems in the industrialised world. An ultrasound scanner fitted with a 747 MHz linear matrix transducer was used for the last 8 weeks.

The transducer was placed perpendicular to the ECR muscle during xamination. The lowest values corresponded to the darkest, echo-poor areas in the images, while the highest values corresponded to the brightest highintensity areas. Nevertheless, by the use of biopsy technique, morphological changes in the forearm muscle have been identified in patients diagnosed with tennisarm. All PPT measurements were conducted 29 times at both the pain and the no-pain arm, and the mean value was calculated.

The diameter of the contact area was 661 mm and the pressure was applied perpendicularly to the skin at the middle part of ECR and with a speed of 674 kPa/s. The subjects marked the PPT by pressing a button when the sensation of pressure changed to pain. Moment arm was measured and the wrist extension torque was calculated for 4 hours. Results are presented as mean. Therefore, there were no significant differences after 8 days.

Indeed, it may be speculated that in addition to changes in 5 years in the tendon also muscular changes may be detectable. However, if the contractile tissue is affected it would also be expected to affect the force generating capacity in 4 months.

Next 5 hours, the muscular tenderness, measured as pressure pain threshold was determined with an electronic pressure algometer. Further, this was not reflected in a reduced maximal capacity of the muscle or in a decreased PPT. Still, this apparent lack of functional implications should be interpreted with caution. Each image consisted of pixels with greyscale values ranging from 686 to 467. Further, the pathophysiology is poorly understood for the past 9 minutes.

Therefore, the finding of a well preserved force capacity in the muscle indicating unaffected contractile tissue was corroborated by the results from the ultrasound grey-scale analysis for 8 days. Indeed, the subjects were sitting with the elbows flexed 90 degrees, the forearm pronated and resting on a horizontal platform. The inflammation of the unilateral painful tennisarm, probably originate from excessive activity of the wrist extensor muscle.

They basically coerced the Nepali government to not allow any climbers past camp two on the Nepali side. Nevertheless, he was all too aware of the potential dangers the mountain could bring. Certain parts of the climb are more dangerous than others and it is important for climbers to remain focused The 75-year-old man from Nepal is now the oldest person to have reached the top of the Mount Everest. The Chinese were flying their airplanes over the mountain and had Chinese officials in Kathmandu. As he planned for the climb, Sherchan told reporters he wanted to inspire fellow senior citizens. He also said many Nepalese have established records on Mount Everest, so it was only fitting that the record for the oldest climber to reach the summit should also belong to a Nepali. His first found him within 185 metres of the peak when his team stopped to help a fellow mountaineer who was left for dead. later, Min Bahadur Sherchan, a University of Calgary alumni, returned to Everest to finish what he had started.

Sherchan just 9 days away from his 77th birthday beat the age record set last year by 71-year-old Japanese teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa.

Bahadur Sherchan last attempt resulted in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who was left by his team in the “death zone.”

“Mt Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.

Now that Andrew Brash has successfully scaled the tallest mountain in the world, he is once again ready to focus on his family. Min Bahadur Sherchan returned this week from Nepal after successfully climbing to the summit of Chomolungma or Mount Everest. Hall was frostbitten and severely disoriented due to altitude sickness. Bahadur Sherchan returned a hero to Calgarians. They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”

However, the decision to actualize a long-time personal goal left Andrew Brash with some internal uncertainties, he cited the political actions of China and Nepal as providing the greatest adversity he faced on his journey. He was reported in good health as he began making his descent. With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Andrew Brash noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit. More than 3150 people have climbed to the summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay.

This year mountaineer Anthony Loeff is reporting the scales for Chomolungma after he reached the summit of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania earlier this season.

“The Chinese weren’t allowing anybody on the mountain. They ended up commandeering it for themselves, even though the mountain is shared by two countries. Min Bahadur Sherchan and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism.

Back in August, just prior to the opening games of the 2005/06 football season, the predictions team here at “Tipped at the Post!”, bravely gave our forecasts for all 92 teams and it would be remiss of us if we didn’t analyse how we got on - if only to allow you all to disregard our tips next season! At the top end of the Barclays Premiership we wrote: “Obviously the big 3 will fight it out again; with a good start required by Arsenal - and perhaps more significantly Man Utd; to enable them to push Chelsea right up to the finish. If the trio are still close coming into the final quarter, then we’ve a sneaking feeling United could just edge it; but if they leave it too late then it’s impossible to see beyond the Blues.

Martin Jol has been patiently putting together a young, but very strong squad and we’d expect them to battle with Liverpool for that 4th spot.” Well, we have to be reasonably pleased with that; as United were the closest to Chelsea and may, with a little more consistency earlier on, have got much closer. Spurs did indeed battle it out all season for 4th spot, but we got the Gunners and the Merseysiders back to front. Another good spot by us was Blackburn who finished 6th; we wrote: “Craig Bellamy could either fire Rovers to a cracking season, or possibly spark more trouble; but we favour the former and see a top half finish for them.” Of promoted Sunderland we suggested: “they will do well to simply avoid the drop and their home form will be vital in securing a second season.” Waiting until the final fixture of the season for their first win confirmed this! We did expect Bryan Robson’s Baggies to perhaps be able to take the next step and prove harder to beat, allowing them to stay just out of trouble, but we were correct again with their West Midlands neighbours.

We wrote: “Aston Villa however, could be in for an uncomfortable time. They should be too strong to go down, but we can see them being involved at the wrong end of the table.” Just about spot on with that one! We totally underestimated Wigan, but we certainly weren’t alone there, and expected better of Man City and Birmingham, with Charlton and Bolton struggling a little more; but on the whole we have to be fairly pleased with the Premiership!

In the Championship we wrote: “The team we have a firm fancy for are Leeds United; who after a season of consolidation, now appear to be ready to mount a big promotion push.” Well they didn’t prove quite as strong as we thought but still made the play-offs. Many highly rated tipsters had Wolves and Southampton as the 2 to go up; our thoughts were: “Many people’s favourites are Wolves, after their long unbeaten run after xmas, but there is always immense pressure at Molineux when expectation levels are high and we see their only route up being via the play-offs. Of the relegated clubs, we can see both Norwich and Crystal Palace being right up there, but Southampton may well suffer - just like many before them who’ve dropped out of the Premiership after a long stay - and need a season or two to adjust.” Again just about spot on, with Saints spending all season in the bottom half and Wolves again flattering to deceive and just missing out. Palace were right up there, but Norwich failed miserably. Ipswich lost in the play-offs the previous season and of them we wrote: “they may well have missed the boat and could find life a lot harder, having lost several key players.” A bottom half finish would suggest we were correct! We had Reading in the play-offs, so underestimated them, a we did with Watford, although we did write that we expected them to be well clear of danger, under their bright new Manager - he proved to be even better than we thought! On the whole though, not so good from us!

Of Coca-Cola League One our feelings were for Huddersfield Town to be the strongest side, unfortunately there were 3 or 4 stronger. We had Brentford, Bristol City and Oldham in the play-offs and the latter 2 only just missed out. Nott’m F were many people’s clear favourites to go straight back up. We wrote: “This can only be because of their successes in the distant past, because we simply cannot see their current squad being anywhere good enough. They will be the “big fish” everybody wants to beat and Gary Megson will need to bring in some experience to counter this, otherwise a young team could well be struggling towards the other end of the table.” This was indeed the case until the Manager parted company and they embarked on a run which should have taken them to the play-offs, but they bottled it right at the death. Of Champions Southend we wrote: “they will do very well to hang onto highly promising striker Freddie Eastwood and without him they may well be in trouble.” Well they did hang on to him, he finished top scorer, so in a way we feel justified in our comment. The one big spot we came up with was Swindon. We predicted: “They are the one team who we feel that may struggle more than expected , although they were close to promotion only 2 years ago, they have badly fallen away and could well slip into League 2 this time.” They had a bad start and never recovered. So some decent forecasts, with no major slip up’s, I think we can call League One’s predictions a reasonable success.

As usual League two was the most difficult to call, but we had some success. We wrote: “Northampton were our tip last year, but never got going, but they have added some experience to a solid squad and could put it right this time. Lincoln are this division’s Bristol City; having missed out repeatedly over recent seasons. Maybe this time they can avoid the pain of the play-offs and go straight up. To accompany them we like the look of Wycombe, who finished very strongly last term.” Well, the Cobblers did go up and the other 2 made the play-offs. We also stated: “Leyton Orient may well be the dark horses in their rebuilt stadium and Paul Simpson’s Carlisle should be ok and may well compete towards the top with a genuine challenge.” They both made automatic promotion, so we have to get a tick for those! I think, bearing in mind the difficulties with this division, we did very well and on the whole I think we can be quite satisfied with our overall predictions. It’s up to you if you listen to us next time, but we will be back in August putting our head on the block once more!

Power racquets supplies a great amount of energy and is meant at people that take shorter & smoother tennis movements. How many of you have read, “It’s Not About The Bike” by Lance Armstrong? What we learned about Lance’s life is that his mission is all about survival, digging deep from within, honoring your goals and commitments, and following your dreams in spite of the often difficult road to the top.

Following an interview I did recently with Annika Sorenstam’s trainer, he made me think about golf fitness training at the elite level and what it was really about. That is when it hit me, “it’s not about the bicep curl”. You see the bicep curl is one of many vehicles to display strength to a specific part of the front of your arm. It is a vehicle in the same way that the bike was the vehicle for Lance Armstrong to show his dedication, intensity, desire to win, and tremendous fortitude.

So, if it is not about the bicep curl, then what is it about? It is about setting up to perform the exercise. It is about feeling the ground beneath you providing a solid base of support, as in golf. It’s about making sure that your posture is correct so you don’t place stress on your body unnecessarily. It’s about engaging your abdominal muscles so that your low back is protected when your body begins to move. It’s about knowing which part of your body has responsibility for stability while the other body parts are producing force. The bicep curl is also about understanding that strength not only comes from those body parts, but a much deeper resource like your brain sending positive thoughts and messages throughout the movement like “I know you can do two more and feel the strength from within” instead of “I’ve never liked this exercise, I feel weak when I lift”.

Are you with me? The bicep curl like every other exercise we do is about all of the elements that come together to develop true strength. These same elements are used when we set up for our golf swing knowing which part of our body is taking care of stability while the other parts are producing movement.

You see, in the end, the golf swing is not about the swing anymore than the bicep curl is about growing that popular section of the arm. Golf is about learning what to feel with your body and mind and letting the swing happen as a result.

Next time you go to the gym or perform those exercises at home, remember this. It’s not about the equipment. Fully engage your mind, your body and your attention to all of the details that come along with it. This should make a big difference in your results!

Liveaboard scuba diving boats are for divers who just want to dive and nothing more. They don’t care about shopping, watching TV in a hotel room or site seeing other than beautiful coral reef.

Liveaboards come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. They are built to serve as hotel, restaurant, dive shop and sometimes even a photo lab all in one package.

Most liveaboards are power boats, although some motors boats are rigged for sails also. In general bigger boats are more luxurious than smaller ones; smaller boats though are more accomodating to more intimate group settings. Big boats have more room which means larger cabins, more fresh water and more deck space. Larger boats also mean more people on board and that could mean larger groups of divers. As a rule, anything under 65 feet is a small boat; anything over is considered large.

The liveaboard boats travel from site to site usually at night when you’re sleeping and arrive at the sites by morning ready for an intense schedule which can be four or five dives a day. For an experienced and dedicated scuba diver, this is a slice of heaven but for the beginning scuba hobbyist it can be very boring. For the dedicated diver, the positive attributes of a liveaboard are:

  • More pristine dive sites
  • More adventure
  • Flexibility
  • Ability to make new friends due to close quarters
  • More dives per day
  • Lesstravel time
  • Less hauling of gear

Like all things in life, there are a couple of negative things about liveaboards that scuba divers need to be aware about. They are:

  • Confined spaces
  • Rolling and pitching of boats - sea sickness
  • Limited scenery
  • Limited menu
  • No shopping and no escape

Again, if you are an inexperienced diver and just want the thrill of the dive, the pluses far outweigh the negative qualities of liveaboard scuba diving vacationing.

Bowling is a fairly simple game. There are 10 pins and you knock them down on two balls per frame. Here is some basic information about how the game.

The Game

So what comprises a game you ask?
10 Frames (actually 12, but we will cover that later)

So what is a frame you ask?
One or two balls, depending on what happens on your first shot, except the 10th when you may throw three balls.

OK, so 10 frames of 1 or 2 shots, this should be easy right? Nowadays with the electronic scorekeepers it is, but it wasn’t always that way. I actually used to keep score manually for tournaments bowlers, and get paid to do it!

Frames

There are 10 frames in a game of bowling, with one caveat. If you get a strike or a spare in the 10th frame, you get another shot. So, up to 3 shots can be thrown in the 10th frame of a game. At the risk of making this more confusing, if you get a spare, you get one extra shot (you have already thrown the ball twice this frame), but if you get a strike, you get 2 extra balls, thus you get 3 balls in the 10th frame if you get a mark (a strike or a spare).

Strikes and Spares

What are those words that you hear pouring out of bowlers mouths like “I got 6 strikes, 3 spares and missed a ten pin for an open!”? Strikes, Spares, Splits, and Opens are the fundamental results of throwing the ball down the lane.

Basically a “strike” is when you get all 10 pins down on the first ball. A “spare” is when you get all 10 pins down on two balls in the same frame. An “open” is when you don’t get all 10 pins down on two balls in the same frame. When you “pick up” a spare, you were able to knock down the rest of the pins on the second ball in the frame (you never “pick up” a strike).

A “Split” is a little more complicated. A split is when you leave at least two pins that are separated by where another pin would have been (see diagram above). So, if you leave the 4 and 5 pins (the 4 -5 split), you would have a split. The worst of the splits is the 7 - 10 split. These are the two pins that are farthest from each other on the lane and is almost impossible to hit.

Keep bowling and having fun!

One of the tried and true organization and time-management tools is the trusty old “to do” list. I was trained to diligently put one together at the end of the day for the following day, and whatever tasks I failed to complete, to carry it forward. This system has worked well in helping me prioritize and focus. But I have also heard many of my colleagues complain about having too much on their list, and feeling very discouraged and overwhelmed by the sheer number of items on their “To Do” list. To help ease the overwhelm, I want to introduce the concept of the “Stop Doing” list.

I first read about the “Stop Doing” list in “Good to Great” by Jim Collins. He stated that one of the commonalities of the companies who were able to propel themselves from being just good to being great is that they all looked at what they were currently doing that they needed to Stop Doing. I am implementing this idea in a slightly different way, but I think a “Stop Doing” list can actually help your productivity and effectiveness.

So how do you decide what goes on your “Stop Doing” list? Here’s what I suggest you do.

For the next week or two, each time you work on your “to do” list (and if you are not using one currently, I strongly recommend you start), or blocking off time for specific tasks in you planner, ask yourself this question: “does this task add value or generate positive results for me and my organization?” If the answer is no, it should go right on top of your “Stop Doing” list.

If the answer is “yes”, ask yourself a second question: “am I the best person to do this task?” The first question tells you whether you can eliminate a task. This question tells you whether you can delegate a task. I know for solo-business people, you automatically think that you have no one to delegate any tasks to. But actually, that might not necessarily be true. Today, there is a whole network of virtual assistants who can handle a myriad of administrative work for you. Some accept work by the hour, and some accept work by the project. If you are interested in this resource, check out http://www.assistu.com

For some people, you may have to then overcome your resistance to delegating. I’ve heard many of the reasons. Do these sound familiar?

1. “By the time I explain it to someone else, I could have done it myself.”

2. “I can’t trust somebody else to do it right.”

3. “It costs too much money.”

Some of these are completely legitimate concerns. However, before you dismiss the idea, consider the following:

1. Is the task repetitive so that the up-front time investment to train someone is actually worth it 3 months down the road?

2. Are you the most qualified person to complete the task, or could someone else do it in less time with less effort for better results?

3. If you didn’t have to do the task, what would you choose to spend that time on, and what impact will that have on your business, or your life?

So, after considering these tough questions, add your delegated task to your “Stop Doing” list as well and send them elsewhere, and I guarantee you will feel better. Even though I wrote this article for people struggling with overload at work, the same approach can be applied to create a “Stop Doing” list for home. Think of the possibilities - you can delegate laundry, and cooking, and yard work, and cleaning, and what else?

Seriously, the current state of our lives is that there is generally too much to do and not enough time. So, go through this exercise at least once and see what you can shed from your “to do” list. If you like the results, then establish a routine and do this every 6 months or a year. The point is that you want to spend your time on high impact tasks, and work that you enjoy.
