The self proclaimed Prince of poker, Scotty Nguyen, was crowned winner of the 2008 WSOP $50,000 HORSE event, but his behavior might compel both peers and fans to present him with a crown of thorns.

After perhaps one too many Michelobs, Nguyen’s jest turned sour as profanities and negativity spewed from his lips. While he is known for his table-talk, his final table performance relied on bold faced lies to sucker unwitting opponents into calling or even raising his bets. He even went as far as to show the audience his cards during the hands he was playing.

Erik Lindgren, who at first chuckled along with Nguyen admitted that he was not on Team Scotty, and that “some nights you can’t beat a drunk.”

Even the 23-year old Michael DeMichele said, “I thought you were an ambassador of poker, I’m disappointed in you Scotty.”

Last year Umberto Brenes made a fool of himself with his LED shark card-protector tomfoolery. From time to time, the spotlight of poker celebrity pauses on a few degenerates from the past.

As a poker player, your conduct and ethics are paramount to your play. If you go around insulting everyone at your home game, you’ll soon realize that no one will want to play with you.

Multiplayer games and tournaments are now offering cash prizes, adding to the thrill of competing. To participate, a valid credit card or paypal account is required. And, a player must live in a state or country that has no laws against online gaming for money. Sites which promote such activities are: www.worldwinner.com and www.arkadium.com

Gaming leagues are becoming professional and organize competitions where cash prizes are worth over US$ 100,000 in cash. These events are seen as business and marketing development opportunities. Hardware manufacturing giants like Intel sponsor gaming clans and see gaming world-wide as a profitable avenue for promoting their products. High-stake gaming competitions are popular, but the real fights occur behind the scenes, where companies spend millions trying to get their technology directly into the hands of gamers

Professional gaming has taken the world by storm and, LAN competitions are high-stake tournaments with a few gamers earning a living just competing. A professional gamer with a sponsorship plan in place can earn up to US$ 500,000 per year. Cyberathlete, Professional League, Gamecaster, Global gaming League, are some of the organizations that host competitions. The first professional gaming league was set up in 1997 and today the competitions are not just televised but covered by major publications and newspapers. MTV, CNN,ESPN, USA Network, ABC World News Today, FOX, WB and others telecast the events live.

Gamers from all walks of life train intensely to become virtual world champions, winning brings fame, money, as well as recognition. And, since 2001 The World Cyber Games are held in a different country each year. The prize in 2004 was worth US$ 400, 000 and competitors played: FIFA Soccer 2004, Need for Speed, Underground, Star-Craft, Brood War, Unreal Tournament 2004, Dawn of war, Dead or Alive Ultimate, and Halo 2.

Gaming is serious; it is about quick thinking, intense practice, team work, interaction with other players, and understanding technology at its best. Gamers have to be on their toes, keep abreast with new launches, changes, patches, cheats, and more.

According to online gaming expert Psychologist Professor Mark Griffiths, “online gaming addiction for a small minority is a real phenomenon and people suffer the same symptoms as traditional addictions. They are the types of games that completely engross the player. They are not games that you can play for 20 minutes and stop. If you are going to take it seriously, you have to spend time doing it”

That gaming is taken seriously is confirmed, many major colleges are offering minor as well as major courses in game design, animation, cognition and gaming, computer music, psychology of play and more. RPI, the Pratt Institute, University of Colorado, the Art Institute of Phoenix, the University of Washington, and the University of Pennsylvania are among those that have programs in computer graphics and game technology. They are set to become a feeder system for the US$ 10 billion a year game industry.

When the PSP was first unveiled to the public, it looked amazing. The PSP was supposed to take portable gaming to an entirely new level, and Sony does seem to be achieving that. The obstacle against the PSP was not the design or games, but the fact that hand held gaming has always taken a back seat to actual full sized counsoles is what the PSP’s, and Sony’s, biggest obstacle were. The hand held gaming has always been the third cousin of game systemshe’s family, but not in the main group. Yet despite this, the Sony PSP has not only survived: but thrived.

The PSP has a system for graphics and games that is unparalleled among all hand held systems. It is designed to be a 3D system just as the past PlayStation systems were. When this was first released, Nintendo released their hand held system at the same time, and since appearance makes first impressions, the PSP looked fantastic right off the bat and made itself the hand held system every gamer wanted. On top of that, the PSP’s advanced graphic technology is completely head and shoulders above every other competitor that has come out. The wide screen format of the screen also looks fantastic, especially in games that feature a first-person and over-the-shoulder perspective.

Those graphics, in addition to the PSP’s beautiful appearance, are what gave the PSP its initial vault to the top of the hand held systems. While gaming companies have tried to figure out for years how to hurdle over gamers who were lukewarm at best towards hand held systems, Sony succeeded. They were the one company capable of designing such a good product that they could keep a gamer’s eyes glued to the system. Sony’s decision to make a system that also played music videos and DVDs has only increased the PSPs potential pool of fans, and kept this beautiful piece of technology in the mainstream while other competitors have fallen to the wayside. The PSP’s incredible gaming capacity allows for the design of games that could never even be considered by other hand held gaming systems, and continues with the promise that bigger and better games will continue to be produced for years to come.

The new X-Box 360 is coming out, and parents and gamers everywhere will be asking themselves: should I buy it now? If not, how long is a good time to wait? The answer will depend on your financial situation - but for most people, it’s probably good advice to wait for a year or so if you can.

The first few months of any new gaming system are mainly for the die-hard gamers. Getting a full X-Box 360 system with enough extras to really be able to play it could cost you in the $600 range, even if you’re only getting a few games. For most parents or gamers who don’t have a serious salary, that’s just too much to justify. Even many of the “extras” are really necessary to playing the games - without a memory card, you can’t save your game, for example, or you might want that extra controller to be able to play against friends. The real reason to wait, however, is because prices for new game systems nearly always go down dramatically within a year or so after they are introduced. The reason: a combination of competition and economies of scale. The competition factor is simple - the new Playstation will be out within the next year, and Microsoft will likely be forced to cut prices to maintain their market share. They don’t want people buying the other system, and they can stop that from happening by making a new deal later on. Economies of scale will also be a factor by then - this is the basic principle that the more of something you make, the cheaper it is to make each individual one on average. So, after they have tooled up the factories to make large runs of the X-Box 360, they’ll be able to lower the price on each individual one.

Spider Solitaire is one of the most popular solitaire card games in the world. It is often named Classic Solitaire Game and “the King of all solitaires”.

Spider Solitaire is a lot of fun and has to be learned like any game. At first glance, this challenging and time-consuming game seems to be too complicated. But spider solitaire is a very easy game to play once you get the hang of it.

Not every game of Spider Solitaire can be won, but you have a better chance of winning if you plan your strategy carefully. Below you will find several simple rules that can increase your chances of winning Spider Solitaire.

1. Build sequences of cards by following suit

Whenever you have a choice, prefer building in suit (“natural builds”). Natural build may be moved as a unit to be built elsewhere. This allows you to expose a hidden face down card, which you may now turn over, or expose an empty pile.

2. Try to expose hidden cards whenever possible

Uncovering hidden cards leads to a new set of possible moves. Besides, it is a way to get empty pile.

3. Try to make empty piles as early as possible

Move cards from tableaus that have fewer cards. Use empty piles as temporary storage when rearranging cards sequences into “natural” builds as far as possible. Move cards to empty spaces to turn over more cards.

4. Build on higher cards first

Among the “out of suit” builds, start with those of highest rank. The reason for this is apparent. You can not move “out of suit” build as a unit to another pile. So this build is of no use except as a temporary storage for cards from other piles. If we start with low card, the build will be finished with an Ace very quickly and then it will be useless. Starting from higher cards allows us to get maximum advantage from it.

5. Get as many cards exposed and arranged in suit order as possible before dealing the next 10 cards from the stock

Otherwise your chances of winning are significantly reduced.

6. As soon as you remove a suit, arrange the remaining cards into “natural builds”

Use empty piles as temporary storage when rearranging cards.

Spend some time practicing this strategy and soon you will find yourself beating Spider Solitaire faster and more often.

Introduction: Being able to cause massive damage is well and good, but it’s a useless ability in either of the following cases: you can’t hit your foe, or you’ve already been dropped. In the world of role playing games, these simple facts explain the existence of defenders, characters who don’t rely on massive damage power to win the day, but get through their battles by outlasting their opponents. Defenders prefer to wear their foes down over time, and since they avoid most attacks against them, they are in a perfect position to do just that.

There are two primary possibilities for defenders, either or both of which might be represented in a given game’s defense-oriented characters. The first involves simply avoiding attacks, causing them to fail utterly. The second involves lessening the impact of those attacks that succeed. Obviously, the best defenders are those who are able to do both.

In Quests of the Realm, defenders are represented, as one would hope, by the defend preference.

Player Tactics: The style of game can have a strong effect on the value of playing a defender. You may wish to set your sights elsewhere in some cases, because unless they have some decent secondary advantages or methods of using their abilities, defenders can be boring to play. Not only do you lack impressive offenses, but smart foes will identify defenders and avoid attacking them. Now, on one hand, this only makes you better at doing what you do best: avoiding getting hit. On the other hand, your big value to the party is to draw off enemy attacks, and if your foes don’t bother attacking you, you’re useless. Worse still, just because you can often avoid attacks doesn’t mean you always will. If your attacks are so weak that you find it as hard to appreciably hurt your foes and they find you, you don’t have any advantage at all in single combat.

In QoTR, defenders have abilities allowing them to defend their allies, thus foiling foes regardless of who they attack. QoTR defenders also have abilities that allow them to turn a foe’s botched attacks to their own advantage, typically by giving them an opening to improve their next attack. If you are playing another RPG, you might want to see if you can find a character who has such abilities before you dedicate yourself to playing a defender.

On the other hand, if characters in your game tend to have multiple specialties, adding defense might be viable regardless of specialty tactics. The fact of the matter is, no matter what your other skills are, adding defense helps you stay alive, so it is always welcome. The only time you want to be careful is when considering an all-out defensive character.

On the subject of combinations, any choice can work fine, but some that stand out are attacker/defender (or blaster/defender), tanker/defender, and achiever/defender. The attacker/defender adds good damage to strong defenses, which makes for a foe both hard to kill and quite capable of killing your opponents. A tanker/defender adds phenomenal endurance to high ability to avoid hits, exponentially improving both advantages. The achiever/defender is good at avoiding attacks and good at succeeding actions (such as defenses), for a layered benefit. Such characters also have at least functional attacks to fall back on.

GM Tactics: Defenders make great boss opponents. An RPG boss, generally speaking, is outnumbered by the characters, but more individually powerful than each one. Having a defense specialization allows it to better handle the threat of multiple foes, while its naturally higher stats can still serve as offensively effective. Such an opponent can be quite stressful to players, since they get many turns but still don’t seem to be causing any effect. Even if the villain isn’t making much real headway itself, the sheer number of misses the characters get can make it seem much more formidable than it actually is.

Elite opponents can also benefit from a defensive specialization. A particularly effective tactic is to have a couple skilled defenders backing up more offensively-minded opponents. While the focus of these articles is always on challenging the players without putting their characters at overwhelming risk, if you are in the market for a truly dangerous battle, an attacker or blaster boss with a couple elite defender minions (provided those defenders can somehow protect the boss) makes a devastating team.

You may wish to shy away from defender fodder foes. Giving fodder opponents high defenses basically means a long, grueling, and potentially embarrassing battle. Fodder opponents are never much expected to seriously threaten the characters, but it’s nice for them to have at least a degree of impact. As defenders, they just get in the way and stay there for longer.

Defenders are skilled at avoiding attacks. They have good survivability, but without other specialties, can be limited in their actual impact on combat. Consider the advantages the defenders of your game have access to. All-out defenders might have really strong survivability, but can be boring to play if all they can do is dodge really well. For players, the best defenders are those that can protect their allies. For GMs, defenders are effective ways at making a battle seem much harder than it actually is—which can be good or bad, depending on what you want the encounter to accomplish.

When Sony announced their next-gen system the PlayStation 3, they touted it as having a massive amount of features. These range from producing 1080p HD visuals, HD movies via Blu-Ray functionality etc. Sony even went as far as promoting TiVo capabilities and functionality, an online service being promoted by fan-boys as PlayStation Live, as well as a content distribution system quite similar to iTunes. This sounds terrific from a consumer perspective, but from a gamer’s perspective, where in this list does it say that it plays games? This is a major problem being brought to our attention by such publications as BusinessWeek, whom are saying that Sony may be going a little to far away from what PlayStation 3’s core function should be, a video game system.

BusinessWeek’s article was titled, “This PlayStation May Play Too Much.” It basically spoke of the fear that with all of these features packed in, and a high cost of production, the standard consumers may be afraid of the Playstation 3 in fear of not knowing how to use it and what to do with it specifically. This is going to be a complicated and complex machine, argues BusinessWeek. They compared the PS3 to another endeavor Sony attempted not too long ago; “Exhibit A: the PSX. Released in Japan in 2003, it was designed to appeal to a broader audience than the hard-core gamers attracted to the PS2. It comes with a 250-gigabyte hard drive and a simple Web browser and plays games, movies, and music. But the PSX bombed as consumers were confused by the hybrid and put off by its $800-plus price tag.”

If the PlayStation 3 releases around a similar price tag, which is being predicted by some, it could possibly have the same fate. BusinessWeek goes on to compare the PlayStation 3 to the Sony PSP as being more popular as a multimedia device rather than a full-fledged gaming system. This would equal out to a lower attach rate for games, meaning less games sold per console sold. This causes publishers to lose money and also costs Sony money because they do not have as much leverage in negotiating licensing fees to produce games on their console. After the high attach rate of games on the Xbox 360 launch, this is a fear that Sony must have because if the PlayStation 3 does not match the Xbox 360’s numbers, Microsoft could gain a lot more momentum and getting even further support for their system.

Talking more about the PS3 BusinessWeek stated, “But since the PSP also plays music and movies, fewer people are buying games designed for it. In the PS2’s initial year on the market, players bought more than three games for each machine that was shipped. For the PSP, that ratio slipped to 2 to 1.” If the PS3 follows this pattern it could prove quite disastrous for Sony. As the launch of the PlayStation 3 grows closer, with a lot more news sure to come at E3 2006 in May, this should be an interesting few months to come.

Video gaming is a very big deal the world over. Whether games are played on computers, over consoles, via handheld devices or even over telephones, video games are taken seriously by those who love them. Offering challenges for the mind, hands and heart, games provide an escape from the everyday world and they simply can be a whole lot of fun. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 may have launched with some bugs, but the console’s popularity is incredible.

Next-gen consoles for gaming are different from their predecessors simply due to the hardware choices they offer. The 360, for example, offers some of the best graphic capabilities gamers have ever seen. Designed for fast-paced, beautiful play, this machine is more than just a gaming box. The next-gen features on the 360 include a hard drive in many of the consoles, online capability, information storage and more. They are meant to be used for gaming and a whole host of other things as well.

Thanks to some smart partnering, Microsoft’s 360 can not only handle game play, but also television and movie downloads. The console easily doubles for an extra DVD player, has a remote and more. Pretty much the only thing the 360 doesn’t do is windows. But, given time, Microsoft may come up with a way to make that possible as well.

The popularity of the next-gen machines is simply due to their superior graphic and playability features. Smooth and responsive, the machines are some of the best platforms going for game play.

Hot game types for the Xbox 360 include:

Sports games: A longstanding favorite of gamers, these include boxing, racing, football, hockey and more. Through 360 games, players can take on the persona of their favorite sports star or even head up and entire team. There’s also the possibility of playing with or against friends in remote locations through Xbox’s online service. This just adds to the fun.

Role playing games: These kinds of titles allow a player to create a new persona for themselves online or off. Typically heroes, players can get online and pal around with buddies from different parts of the country or the world as they take on challenges and bad guys together. Or, with a lot of titles, they have the option of going it alone, offline, as well.

Strategy: Ever wonder what it was like to be on a World War I battlefield. Gamers can get a safe taste of combat through these games. Or, if war games are to a player’s liking, there are plenty of other strategy games, including chess, puzzle games and more.

First-person shooters: These are games that enable a player to become the hero with the gun. Titles like Doom and Quake have made this genre a favorite among players of all ages. In these games, players are expected to move through mazes, battlefields and what not, shooting their way to victory while solving problems along the way.

The Xbox 360 was the first next-gen console on the market. Backed by the biggest software and game making company going, the machine is expected to only get better over time.

Mahjong is a traditional Chinese game, which literally means “the game of a hundred intelligences” (in Chinese). There are various versions of mahjong today: the Chinese, the Japanese and the American, each with its own set of rules. Mahjong is a game that involves skill, intelligence, estimation as well as luck. It has been traditionally a gambling game and is still played today in clubs and special mahjong houses. There are also international mahjong tournaments held across the world. Ma Chiao, Mo Tsiah, Ma Cheuk, Ma Jong, Ma Chiang, Ma Chong, Man Chu, Mah Diao, Pung Chow, Mah Chong, Ching Chong, Mah Cheuk, Ma Chiang, Kong Chow, Mah Deuck, Lung Chan, Mah Lowe, Pe Ling, Baak Ling are other names for Mahjong.

Mahjong is generally played by four people though it can also have 2, 3 or 5 players. A full game has 16 hands of play in four rounds named after the four directions- east, south, west and north in that order. Each player has a particular direction/wind, starting with East for the first player. Generally, the first player is selected by throwing the dice. The player with the highest score gets to be the first player.

The next step is to build the wall i.e. to arrange the tiles in a stack. The tiles are mixed well and arranged in 18 stacks (two tiles one on top of the other) in a horizontal row in front of each player in the form of a square. The stack is then broken and the tiles distributed among the players according to a particular format so that each player has 13 tiles each. The rest of the tiles are known as the wall and are kept in the middle.

Each player begins to discard the tiles and drawing from the wall. The objective is to get 4 sets and a pair. A set of tiles may be a sequence of three consecutive same suit tiles (CHOW) or three identical tiles (PUNG) or a set of 4 of a kind (KONG). The game ends when one player has finished accumulating the 4 sets and a pair. The game is said to be a “draw” if none of the players manages to win by the time the wall is exhausted. There are many variations in scoring in mahjong. It involves determining the points; multiplication of the points according to applicable doubles; and determining the payment. There are also penalties for breaking certain rules. The points defer based on the sets: sequences, melded triplets, concealed triplets, melded fours and concealed fours.

New international rules have been formulated for mahjong for international championships and tournaments like the World Championship. The new rulebook contains 80 combinations of patterns and scoring elements based on traditional as well as modern variants of the game.

Mahjong provides detailed information about mahjong, mahjong solitaire, mahjong tiles, mahjong online and more. Mahjong is the sister site of Free Online Casinos.
