Some tools are essential for decoupage, such as scissors, glue, varnish, cotton swabs, damp rag and various images of all kind of sources. Its also a good idea to have tweezers, craft knife, cutting mat, paint brushes, craft roller, piece of sponge, metal ruler, colored pencils, water soluble pen and decoupage medium. However, there are a number of other items which are nice to have for decoupage but not always necessary:

Paints

Water-based paints are the best to use, including acrylics. If the paint says it says it can be diluted or cleaned in water, then it’s water based. Acrylic paints come in various sizes and a large range of colors. Most good craft shops have small bottles, which are ideal if you have a smaller object to paint. It’s best to use foam applicators to apply paints as it lays a smoother layer than a brush, which leaves small grooves. For a larger project, you’ll need a paintbrush or foam roller.

Felt and Cork

These are useful for finishing off a project and giving it a professional look. Glue either cork or felt to the base. This also prevents scratches on the surface where you display your item. You can use self-adhesive cork or you can simply use craft glue to glue the felt or cork down. When dry cut carefully along the edges. With cork, use a very fine sandpaper to smooth the edges.

Sandpaper

Sandpaper comes in various grades but usually a 300-grit and 400-grit sandpaper should be fine. You night need a coarser grade if you are preparing old painted or varnished wood.

Sponge Applicators

These come in various sizes and are ideal since they don’t leave stroke marks. The best ones to use are firm, high-density foam since they last longer. Never use them with paint or varnish that needs to be cleaned with turpentine as this ruins them. Using a foam roller when painting a larger surface gives a slightly textured finish.

Porcelain Medium

Porcelain or ceramic medium can be used as a sealant, glue, and finishing coat. It’s a thermo-setting, water-based product cured in the oven. This is the ideal for decorating glazed ceramics, pottery, glass, tiles, tin, or enamel. It forms a hard scratch and heat resistant film. It’s expensive, but a little goes a long way. Surfaces need to be dust and grease free. Brushes can be cleaned in soap and water.

Fabric or Textile Medium

Fabric or textile Medium is used as a sealant, glue, and finishing coat. It’s water-based and can be used on cotton and cotton mix fabrics. The fabric needs to be washed first to remove sizing. Once applied, it must be dried for a few hours and then heat-sealed by ironing.

Candle Medium

Candle medium is used as a sealant, glue, and finishing coat and is a water-based product. It can be mixed with equal parts of paint to paint the candle before decorating. It tends to be sticky and may need a layer of water-based varnish over it.

Outdoor Medium

Outdoor medium is used as a sealant, glue, and finishing coat. It’s used for metal, plastic, terracotta tiles, stone, wood, soap, pottery, glass, hardboard, wall, galvanized metal, and candles. It is slightly waterproof and waxy properties and unsuitable for fabrics.

Gesso

Gesso is used to create a perfectly smooth and blemish-free surface. There are also colored gessoes available. You can apply gesso to wood, bisque, and eggs. A smooth surface may need four to six coats. Lightly dry sand each coat and wipe off dust with a damp sponge. After the last coat, wet sand with superfine sandpaper. The gesso will be gooey but when it dries, the surface is smooth. You can mix paint with the gesso to make your own colored gesso. Gesso makes a difference on wooden boxes with rough routed edges and means that they require fewer coats of varnish. Usually, you need only wipe the gesso on with a piece of cloth and wipe off. This leaves a thin layer.

You can make your own gesso by mixing equal parts of PVA glue and whiting. Whiting can be found at paint stores and sporting supply stores. It’s used for marking lines on athletic fields.

Crackle

There are two different types of crackle medium - one is applied between coats of paint and one on top of the finished work. The size and shape of the crackles depends on the sponge you use. The larger the holes in the sponge, the larger the crackles. Sponge on your topcoat thickly and quickly, rotating the sponge as you go. Don’t go back over areas you have covered. Crackling will begin immediately, so you can’t go back without destroying out the crackles.

When planning your crackling, decide which color is to be the top color and which is to be the crackle. Using contrasting colors gives a more pleasing result. For example, for a red box with white crackles, paint the white first, then crackle medium, then red paint. Leave it to dry for forty-five minutes after applying.

Chances are your craft room or child’s play area has a handful of colorful markers. Since markers are available in so many different colors and often come packaged in coordinating shades, markers are the perfect mediums to stretch your color options without breaking the bank. Using markers with rubber stamps is a perfect way to make classy paper craft projects and bright vibrant scrapbooking pages. Here are five great tips for getting the most from your markers and rubber stamps and making marker magic.

1. Mark up those ink jet transparencies! Using any ink jet transparency, ink the rubber stamp for your project with the desired marker color and stamp the print side of the transparency. The glue on the ink jet transparency will bond the marker ink to the transparency film and will dry in a short period of time. You can then cut around the stamped image and mount on your project!

2. Color Metal! Using any silver brads, paper clips, or any other silver metal embellishments, color the metal with the marker of choice. If you are using water-based markers, bond the ink to the metal with a light mist of hair spray or acrylic spray-on glue and allow to dry. This technique will allow you to make many different custom colored metal embellishments coordinated with your current project.

3. Cellophane Crackle Color! Take a piece of clear cellophane and lay it on a flat surface. Tape the edges to hold the cellophane in one place. Using a watermark stamp pad, stamp the surface of the cellophane the desired size according to the stamp you will be using. Using your markers, color the stamped cellophane, blending the colors with q-tips, brushes, or light mists of water. Taking your rubber stamp, cover the surface by gently tapping the stamp to the cellophane. Proceed to stamp your project with this watercolor-crackled look!

4. Embossing Powder Power! Gently dust a piece of vellum with corn starch. Using embossing ink, stamp the vellum and cover with your choice of embossing powder. Using a heat tool, melt the embossing powder. Take a handful of similar colored markers and draw various sized triangles in a random pattern on the reverse side of the stamped vellum. Color in the triangles with the markers in a random color pattern. Gently spray the surface with a light water mist and allow to dry. Using spray-on adhesive, lightly set the ink on the reverse side and cut out around the embossed image. Attach to your next project for an amazing stained glass raised vellum embellishment!

5. Shade These Threads! Markers are the perfect mediums for coloring in the non inked areas of a stamped fabric image. Simply start by stamping the fabric with the desired color dye-based ink pad. Allow to dry. Using markers, color in all remaining areas accordingly. To soften the marker lines, gently spray the fabric with water. You can dry the fabric with a hair dryer or allow to dry in the air. Cut out your fabric and place on the desired project!

Using these simple marker techniques is a fantastic way to gather a large variety of colors and inexpensively fill in the color wheel areas for which you have no stamp pads. Markers are a wonderful solution for vibrant colors on a wide variety of surfaces. Go ahead, try those markers and stamps out today!

Firstly, we had decided that we would only collect antiques that we considered to be beautiful, secondly, the craftsmanship had to be outstanding and thirdly we preferred to collect really unique treasures! By unique, we mean hand crafted, rather than mass-produced antiques such as rare postage stamps. We also were inclined to prefer the small Asian antiques that could easily be safely stored without taking up too much space.

ANTIQUE SNUFF BOTTLES, PENDANTS AND JADE
So we have been collecting (mostly at the top end of the market) Chinese snuff bottles, pendants and jade carvings. All of these antiques are truly unique works of art, not always just because of being hand made, but also because of the materials used.

We first came across Chinese snuff bottles, in a small shop in London that had quite a range of snuff bottles, but it was the stone snuff bottles that particularly intrigued us. Not only had beautiful bottles been formed from a lump of rock that are incredibly well hollowed, through such a tiny hole in the neck, but also they managed to create pictures on some of these bottles from the natural markings or inclusions that happened to be found within the stone. We decided these were worthy of a lot more study, as we were fascinated and the prices of the finest examples were within our reach.

But how and why did we end up collecting pendants and jade carvings having started with snuff bottles? The real reason was due to what I call the constant changing of comparative values. These are what one evaluates by trying to compare the craftsmanship involved with the current relative value.

PENDANTS
As an example, we once stopped buying snuff bottles for a while. This was partly because the prices had suddenly escalated, at such an incredible rate (this can happen now and then in any form of antique collecting), so it was very hard for us to accept paying so much more, for just the same quality of bottles, as those we already owned. But there was also another reason; it was about at this time that I had discovered (a dealer friend had shown me a small collection) the existence of very fine Chinese pendants. The very same artists, who had made the best snuff bottles, had also made these pendants. We were instantly hooked!

The first pendant we bought was an exceptional piece and had a lot of appeal, especially as the price was so much less than half the cost of a similar quality bottle! Admittedly no hollowing out was involved, in forming the pendant, but some pendants are wonderfully undercut and the remarkable carving skills admired in snuff bottles were still very much evident in these pendants.

So that is how collecting pendants began, quite a while later we learnt that really fine pendants are surprisingly rare, far more so, than top quality snuff bottles. The search was on and whenever we found one, the price remained much lower than an equivalent bottle. Partly this was due to the fact that there were simply not as many pendant collectors as there were snuff bottle collectors. This fact did not deter us!

Just as with snuff bottles there are lots of poor quality pendants (and modern copies) that are very easy to find. But in this specialised antique collecting area, it is only the finest of the antiques that are really worth collecting, both from the satisfaction and pleasure derived from appreciating the superior quality of these carvings but also from the investment point of view.

JADE
When considering jade, little jade snuff bottles and pendants are relatively far more expensive than the larger jade carvings, for the amount of work and the size of stone one acquires, although the quality might be equally high. Years ago this was not the case, but now you can buy fine large carvings for not much more than you have to pay for the best little handling pieces.

These carvings are to be found in numerous forms such as animal sculptures, figures, bowls, boxes, screens and boulder carvings. There are some remarkable vases with lids attached by a chain that can consist of a large number of links, all carved out of the one piece of rock. This is quite amazing when one appreciates how hard and difficult Jade is to work with.

Some fine pieces are of a good colour and flawless material, others make good use of natural colours and markings found in the stone. The quality of the carving in the 18th century of jade was really superb and even some of the early 19th century pieces are very fine, and in my view this is an area where there are still some good antique carvings to buy available.

These Beanie Babies have become known as Original Nine, a named filled with wonder amongst collectors around the world. It is as legendary as maybe Fantastic Four or Oceans Eleven. Or maybe these Beanie Babies launched in late 1993 at the New York World Toy Fair just plain play in a division of their own.

As with many new introductions there were people who were sceptical. They nicknamed these beanies Road Kill. This due to their all new design, which included being somewhat understuffed and containing a mix of traditional stuffing and the all new beans. The design made it possible to place your beanie baby in various positions, sitting or laying down.

The concept was simple, plush animals with a small number of colors and some facial expressions added. More than the beanie babies themselves what also became a vital part of their fame was their hang tags. In the beginning most people removed these tags, at this time they did not have the later poems on them either, but later collectors kept the tags on there and the most valuable beanies today all have their hang tag intact. Several pages have been written on the topic of these hang tags and it might well be possible to base a doctors degree on the research of these tags. With the years the came in a multitude of variations.

Back to the group known as the Original Nine. These beanie babies were named Cubbie the Bear (originally named Brownie the Bear, Splash the Whale, Patti the Platypus, Squealer the Pig, Legs the Frog, Pinchers the Lobster, Chocolate the Moose and Spot the Dog. As with all Beanies, these have been retired during the years. When the concept of retirement was first introduced by Ty Warner in 1996 the fame of the beanie babies really took off.

Of the beanies mentioned above May of 1997 saw the retirement of Flash and Splash. In October the same year Spot and Legs did the same. The following year, 1998, all the other five were retired with Chocolate the Moose being the last one in December of that year.

Though they have now retired these Beanie Babies will forever be remembered as the ones who made it all happen in those early years together with their father and creator Ty Warner. Today it is hard to believe that originally the beanies were actually meant for kids to play with!

Sometimes trying to decide on a craft idea can be extremely frustrating. It seems as though every craft idea has already been thought about and made, and for the most part it has. But sometimes it’s fun to make a really simple craft project but just put your own spin to it.

Easter is a fun time to make crafts. Easter craft ideas can be full of color and whimsy, not to mention that fun Easter Rabbit. Of course, an Easter craft idea usually consists of making an Easter Basket. Well, this is no exception. But once again, add your own spin to the idea and make it your own.

Something unique to make an Easter Basket from is a metal bucket. Small metal buckets can be found at most craft stores. Of course, you can decide on the size of the bucket. Take your metal bucket and paint it with your choice of colors. Create your own design and have fun with it. Then you will need embellishments. Various color ribbons are fun to place around the bucket or you may just want one strand of ribbon. Then continue embellishing with flowers, buttons, beads, or even a belt buckle.

As for the “grass” to place in the bucket, one suggestion is to use shredded paper. If you have paper that is straw colored then that may be even better. This would be something a bit different from the “Easter grass” at the store.

Now your Easter Basket could be used for hunting eggs or maybe as a centerpiece for your table.

As stated before, sometimes it is rather hard to come up with crafting ideas. I’ve been crafting for several years and absolutely love it but there are times that I get what I call “crafter’s block.” Yes, it’s similar to “writer’s block” but with crafts. Keep in mind that just because it’s someone else’s craft idea doesn’t mean it’s not your own creation. It’s up to you to design it how you wish.
